Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Heartbreaker to Sacramento State
Aug. 28, 2010
Corvallis, Ore. – Freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) was errorless on 14 attempts, racking up nine kills in the Beavers five-set heartbreaking loss to Sacramento State (20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 12-15) on Saturday afternoon in the team’s second match of the Corvallis Invitational.
“We are a work in progress,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We have to find the right people for or a good combination. There was some good sparks today. Mona and Kelsey added a spark from a bench. We also need to work on our timing errors.”
After falling in the opening set, Zimmerman provided a spark off of the bench in the second set, hammering five balls and adding three digs and a solo block. Kressl also came into the set, making an immediate impact with three kills and an ace to boost the Beavers over the Hornets, overcoming eight ties and taking the third and final lead change.
Momentum shifted coming out of the break giving the Hornets the 2-1 advantage, but the Beavers battled back in the fourth to tie things up and force a fifth set behind the strong blocking duo of Kressl and sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) with senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) controlling the offensive side with her swing.
But the Beavers were unable to start the deciding set sharply, allowing Sacramento State to build an early 5-0 lead. The team battled back within two but the Hornets put away the match in their favor with a kill by Olivia Moss.
The Hornets’ Janelle Currey pounded a match-high 23 kills, while libero Breanne Menees dug a match-high 26 balls.
