Record Falls in Day One of Swimming Pac-10s
Feb. 24, 2010
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Oregon State record for the 200-yard medley relay only lasted one year as the team of Jenni Dole, Signe Larson, Anna Crandall, and Ashley Kerekanich broke the record by over a second Wednesday at the Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships with a time of 1:40.26.
"We got off to a really good start tonight," Oregon State women's swimming head coach Larry Liebowitz said following day one of Pac-10s. "Setting the school record on the first night is pretty impressive and there was a lot of people happy with their times."
Oregon State is currently in fifth place through two events with a score of 96 points just 20 points behind Arizona and USC who are tied for first with 116 points.
The 200 medley time beat the time set last season at the Pac-10 Championships and is good enough to be a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships next month.
In the second and final event of the first night, Oregon State finished sixth behind another season best time of 7:19.56 in the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Crandall, Brittney Iverson, Lisa Chewning, and Rachel O'Brien finished with another provisional qualifying time for the Beavers.
"The legs of the relays were all really outstanding," Liebowitz said. "It's now important to get into a routine in between sessions. These four days are a pretty grueling test. A lot of the girls have been doing this for a while so once they get into a routine they'll be just fine."
The 2010 Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships continue tomorrow at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif. with the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, and the 200 freestyle relay. The preliminary heats for the individual event start at 11 a.m. with the finals starting at 6 p.m.
