The Oregon State women’s soccer team kicks off the regular season August 19th with a battle of the rankings against Florida State at 7:00 p.m. at Paul Lorenz Field.

The Seminoles and the Beavers will both enter the game nationally ranked fifth and 19th respectively. The Beavers are coming off a successful 2010 campaign with a trip to the NCAA tournament and the Sweet 16.

Oregon State is returning with a full and experienced roster after losing only one senior in Courtney Wetzel. Freshman Natalie Meiggs, junior Lindsay Meiggs younger sister, is the only true freshman on the roster for 2011.

The Beavers are returning 10 starters and five seniors from the 2010 roster including senior All-American goalkeeper Colleen Boyd, 2010 Pac-10 First Team honoree junior Chelsea Buckland, and the 2010 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year sophomore Jenna Richardson.

Boyd is coming off an outstanding 2010 campaign where she earned such honors as Pac-10 All Conference first team, the NSCAA All-Pacific Region first team, and was named an NSCAA All-American. She started all 21 games in 2010, recorded a school record 14 shutouts and set the school record for consecutive scoreless minutes.

Buckland is back in Oregon after spending the summer with the Canadian National team at the Women’s World Cup in Germany. In 2010, she started in all 20 appearances for Oregon State. She was named to the NSCAA All-Pacific Region third team and the All-Pac 10 second team. She led the team with 10 goals and tied for the team lead with 23 points.

Richardson had a standout freshman year in 2010 where she played in 19 games and started 11 and was selected to the Soccer America Freshman All-America first team. She finished tied for the team lead with 23 points and second with nine goals and five assists.

The 2011 schedule will be a test for the Beavers as they will meet six opponents ranked in the NSCAA top 25.

The admission to the game Friday night is free, but the team will be collecting canned food items for Community Outreach. Their partnership with Community Outreach started in 2008 and they have been able to collect around 700 to 1,000 canned food items a season.
