CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women’s soccer team defeated the UC Davis Aggies 1-0 Sunday to finish the Oregon State Nike Invitational and improve it's record to 6-2-1.
“This was a very good weekend,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “We picked up two wins. Friday was a very good game for us for 90 minutes. Today, I thought our first half performance was very good. In the second half, we started off strong and then we faded a little bit. I have to give the girls credit because they rolled up their sleeves and grinded it out.”
Oregon State outshot the Aggies 14-5 in the first half. The Oregon State offense dominated the Aggies defensive half, but the UC Davis goalkeeper came up big in goal to keep the game 0-0 into halftime. The UC Davis goalkeeper had five saves in the first half.
The score didn’t stay tied for long after halftime. Chelsea Buckland scored her fourth goal of the tournament and her fourth goal of the season in the 48th minute to give the Beavers the lead 1-0. After Haley Shaw slipped a ball through the Aggie defense, Buckland ran onto the ball, dribbled past the goalkeeper and found the back of the net to earn herself the Oregon State Nike Invitational Offensive MVP.
“Chelsea this weekend has come out and really performed to the standard that we are used to seeing from her,” Rhode said. “We are happy for her to get the goals and the assists and also to just come out and play with that determination and competitiveness that we have always seen. I am glad that she is back and firing the way that she is.”
UC Davis came out and put pressure on the Beaver defense in the second half, outshooting the Beavers 10-6, but Colleen Boyd stayed strong and kept Oregon State in the lead to pick up the win.
Oregon State will return to action Friday Sept. 23 against the University of Colorado in their first conference match of the season. The game is set to kick-off at 5:00 p.m. at Paul Lorenz Field.
