Sept. 13, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team connected on two goals in a 71 second span in the second half to rally for a 2-1 victory over Loyola Marymount in the finale of the Oregon Nike Invitational on Sunday. With the victory, Oregon State's fifth straight, the Beavers improve to 5-1-0 on the year while Loyola Marymount falls to 4-3-0 with the loss.
"The team just keeps fighting and they showed a lot of character battling back from the late goal in the first half," head coach Linus Rhode said. "They stuck with the game-plan and we were able to pick-up a good win."
For the second consecutive contest and the third time this season, Ashley Seal would provide the game-winner as the sophomore connected in the 73rd minute. On a loose ball inside the penalty area, Seal fired a shot past the keeper and inside the far post for her third goal of the season.
Before Seal's game-winning tally, Oregon State tied the game just 71 seconds earlier as Melinda Ingalls scored in the 72nd minute. On a crossing pass from Milan Cabrera, Ingalls redirected the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season to tie the game.
Despite holding a 13-3 edge in shots at the break, Oregon State found itself trailing at half as Brittney Sanford connected on a penalty kick in the 45th minute to give Loyola Marymount the lead.
Oregon State would continue to control possession throughout the second half, holding a 28-6 edge in shots for the contest, as the Beavers finally broke through with a pair of goals for the win.
Ashley Wood picked up her second win of the season for Oregon State as the senior made three stops while allowing one goal. Allyssa Clark took the loss for LMU, making 11 stops on the day.
Ingalls had four shots on goal to lead Oregon State as Seal and Brittney Sheffield each had two shots on goal for the Beavers.
The victory marked the first time since Oregon State opened the 2004 season with a 5-0-0 mark the Beavers have won five straight contests. In addition, Oregon State now owns a 2-1-0 mark against LMU all-time.
Oregon State will return to action on Friday, Sept. 18, as the Beavers return home to host the Oregon State Nike Invitational as they open play at the tournament against Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m.
