CORVALLIS, Ore. -
The Oregon State women’s soccer team came away with a win today after defeating the New Mexico Lobos 2-1 in the first game of the Nike Portland Tournament.
The Beavers struck early in the game when senior Ashley Folsom found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, off a header in just the second minute of the game.
"The first goal was a nice goal and it was scored off a set-piece," head coach Linus Rhode said. "Ashley timed her run well and finished it off nicely far post. It was nice to see one of the set-plays we had been working on pay off."
New Mexico tried to even the score in the fifth minute of the game off a header, but senior goalkeeper Colleen Boyd was there to keep the Beavers in the lead.
Jenna Richardson tried to add another goal to the Beavers performance in the eighth minute when she took a show from the right side that nearly missed the post. Richardson got her chance to make the score 2-0 in the 27th minute of the game. She took the opportunity after Haley Shaw passed her the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and Richardson sent a rocket into the back of the net to put the Beavers up by two.
"We built it up through the midfield and Haley played her the ball," Rhode said. "Jenna took a nice first touch toward the top of the 18-yard box and finished it far post. She bent it around the goalie."
New Mexico answered Richardson’s goal with one of their own in the 35th minute to make the score 2-1. The game was evenly matched in the first half with both teams having multiple shots on goal.
The second half of the game was a hard fought battle between the two teams. Justyne Freud found the ball at her feet in the 77th minute and ripped a shot from the top of the box, but was denied by the New Mexico goalkeeper. Both teams ended the half with three shots a piece for the second half.
"The second half both teams just really felt the affect of the heat, so the game slowed down and there weren't a lot of good opportunities on either goal," Rhode said. "I think both teams were just trying to keep the ball as much as possible and we were trying to run the clock down."
The Oregon State Beavers will return to action Sunday Sept. 11, to take on the Portland Pilots at 2:30 p.m. to close out the Nike Portland Tournament.
