The Oregon State Women's Soccer Team Tie Santa Clara 1-1 After Two Overtimes
Sept. 2, 2011
The Broncos found the back of the net after a free kick went off the crossbar and into the goal in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Broncos kept the pressure on Oregon State, but senior goalkeeper Colleen Boyd was strong in goal and kept the score at one through halftime.
“It was a great header,” Rhode said. “We built it up from the right wing and got a nice diagonal ball across the goal and Ashley Seal did a great job of getting in front of her marker and she put a diving-header into the far post.”
Oregon State and Santa Clara battled until the end of regulation, which sent the teams into the first overtime. The game was a physical battle from the start to the finish with 30 total fouls and four yellow cards handed out during the game.
The Broncos outshot the Beavers two to seven in the first half. The Beavers returned the same number of shots in the second half, outshooting Santa Clara seven to two.
“I think we started the second half with more confidence and more urgency,” Rhode said. “That carried over in to overtime as well.”
The second overtime went scoreless and neither team was able to get off a shot as the teams ended in a 1-1 tie to end the game.
“I think that it is good for us to play teams like Santa Clara because it shows us how we continue to get better,” Rhode said. “Santa Clara is a very good team, coming away with a tie is not ideal, but it still puts us in a good spot to move forward.”
The Oregon State Beavers, now 2-1-1, will return to action Sunday Sept.4 to take on the New Hampshire Wildcats at 10:00 a.m. to finish the University of Oregon Nike Tournament.
