Gymnastics Set to Entertain with Exhibition Thursday
Nov. 17, 2009
CORVALLIS - The Oregon State gymnastics team will unveil the 2009-10 Beavers Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at legendary Gill Coliseum. Admission is free and the team will sign autographs following the exhibition.
"The Orange and Black Exhibition is always a great opportunity to get out in front of the crowd, especially for the freshmen," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "The team has done a great job with the pressure situations we've put them in, but doing it in a different venue is important. It will be good for them to feel the hard landings."
Unlike in years past when the Beavers were able to split into two teams, this year's exhibition will feature a single team performing on each of the four events.
Seven gymnasts are scheduled to vault, while eight will perform routines on the uneven bars and balance beam. As many as 10 gymnasts will exhibit their floor exercise routines.
Four-time All-American Mandi Rodriguez and two-time All-American Jen Kesler are expected to lead a cast that includes nine returning letterwinners from last year's squad that finished 11th at the NCAA Championships. Joining the Beavers for the 2010 campaign is an outstanding group of four freshmen that includes Leilani Alferos, Kelsi Blalock, Melanie Jones and Makayla Stambaugh, all of which are expected to compete on multiple events at the exhibition.
Oregon State opens its season Jan. 8 when the Beavers host Illinois, Air Force and Alaska-Anchorage for the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational.
