SAMMAMISH, Wash. -
The Oregon State Women's Golf team is in 10th place after the first round of play at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational hosted by the University of Washington. Lauren Archer is only five shots off the pace and is tied for 14th after the first day.
"We hit a lot of fairways today and I saw a lot of good shots today," head coach Rise Lakowske said. "But this is just a difficult course. It always is and always will be. That's why they play so many major tournaments here."
On Monday, the first day of the three day tournament, teams played 18 holes with the Beavers starting on the 10th hole of the Sahalee Country Club, a par-72, 6,136 yard course.
Leading the way for the Beavers was senior Lauren Archer, who shot a 5-over-par 77 and is tied for 14th, five strokes behind the leader, Natasha Podmore from the University of San Francisco. Freshman Christy Fogerty, who is playing in the tournament as an individual, also shot a 77 in Monday's round.
"Lauren really struck the ball well today," Lakowske said. "She gave herself a lot of opportunities and saved herself when she needed to. Christy (Fogerty) played well too, it's just unfortunate that she won't count toward the team score."
Junior transfer Kristina Gargaro, who qualified to play in the team competition for the first time at OSU, carded an opening round 83. Sophomore Whitney French shot an 84 and senior Brittany Stewart tallied an 87.
The Beavers' opening round total of 324 has them 28 strokes behind the leader, California (296), but two strokes ahead of Civil War rival, Oregon (326).
"I definitely expect to see some improvement tomorrow," Lakowske said. "The green speed is tough we should adjust to that tomorrow."
