April 16, 2012
HALF MOON BAY, Calif. - Sophomore Seshia Telles and freshman Anica Yoo each shot a 5-over 149 through 36 holes on Monday to lift the Oregon State women's golf team to a tie for 11th place at the second annual Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at Half Moon Bay, Calif.
The Beavers, ranked 53rd in the nation by golfstat.com, finished the long first day of the 54-hole event with a 26-over 302-300--602 at the par-72, 6,034-yard Half Moon Bay Golf Links Ocean Course. The final 18 holes of the two-day event will be played on Tuesday.
"The team had a tough day on the greens," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "Everyone had some good moments today and I believe they can make great improvements tomorrow. Now we just need to stay committed and get the job done from start to finish."
Telles shot a 2-over 74 in the morning round and a 3-over 75 in the afternoon, while Yoo carded a 4-over 76 in the first 18 holes and followed it up with a team-best 1-over 73 after the lunch break to put each in a tie for 29th on the individual leader board.
"I was very pleased with Lauren's performance and the progress she made throughout the day," Alexander said. "This should be a good confidence boost for her and give her the confidence she needs for the final round tomorrow. Anica also had some streaks of great holes. She just made too many mental mistakes on a few holes. Those mistakes made by everyone cost us today. We will work hard mentally to visualize and focus tomorrow."
No. 1 UCLA has a 14-stroke lead over its rival USC after posting a ridiculous 13-under 280-283--563 compared to the 1-over 290-287--577 by the Trojans. San Jose State is third with an 8-over 584 and Stanford and Washington are tied for fourth with a 9-over 585.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start on Tuesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
