Women's Golf tied for Ninth after Day One at Kiawah Island
Feb. 21, 2010
Kiawah Island, S.C. - The Oregon State women's golf team is in a tie for ninth through one round at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. Senior Brittany Stewart and Sophomore Whitney French led the Beavers with a 3-over-par 75 on the day.
"They have played the golf course before, because golf courses in this area have a lot of water and different grasses," women's golf head coach Risë Lakowske said. "The knowledge that they got from last year was definitely helpful. Brittney Stewart was 2-under-par after 12 holes, and she played pretty steady all day, and it was just a good solid round today,"
The event features a unique set up where each team will play both the Cougar Point and Oak Point golf courses in the first and second rounds. The top 20 teams after two rounds will play for the tournament championship on the Cougar Point course with the remaining teams playing on the Oak Point course.
The Beavers are currently standing at 22-over with a round one score of 382 on the par 72, 6,007 yard Cougar Point golf course in clear sunny weather conditions.
"Any golf course on this island is sandy soil, so there can be delays because of the rain, and then it accumulates of the greens," Lakowske said. "I think we will run into the weather, and have a delay possibly, so everybody has to deal with the same type of thing. We are prepared for the rain."
Sarah Mooney of Augusta State is currently leading the tournament after shooting 4-under, 68 on the Cougar Point course. Augusta State leads all teams after shooting a 4-under-par 284 as a team on the Cougar Point course.
Oregon State returns to action tomorrow morning at the par-72, 5,907 yard Oak Point course and will be starting on the back nine at 7:15 a.m. EST.
