Feb. 18, 2012
STANFORD, Calif. - The Oregon State women's golf team is in sixth place after the first round of the 2012 Peg Barnard Invitational after shooting a 24-over 308 on Saturday at the par-71, 6,092-yard Stanford Golf Course.
The Beavers were led by sophomore Lauren Sewell who shot a 4-over 75, which included a team-best three birdies, and is tied for eighth at the two-day, 36-hole, 12-team event.
"Lauren finished the round with two birdies on the last two holes," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander added. "So a strong finish helped put her in the top-10. We are all looking forward to the final round tomorrow."
Freshman Anica Yoo fired a 5-over 76 (t17), senior Whitney French finished with a 7-over 78 (t27), Seshia Telles had an 8-over 79 (t33) and junior Rachael Fischer shot an 11-over 82 (t45). Senior Elyse Okada is competing as an individual and finished with a 17-over 88.
"We played the course well from tee to green; really well, in fact," Alexander said. "However, we did not chip and putt very well. So with improvement in those areas we should drastically improve our ability to score tomorrow. I was really pleased with our ball striking."
California leads the tournament after an 11-over 295, while Fresno State (17-over 301), host Stanford (19-over 303, Washington (20-over 304) and San Jose State (22-over 306) round out the top five. Christine Uhalde of Fresno State was the only player in the field to shoot a sub-par round to lead the tournament with a 1-under 70.
The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 on Sunday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
