Half dozen OSU wrestlers claim national rankings, while Beavers look to break .500 mark

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State wrestling team continues to secure its spot as one of the 15 best teams in the nation, following the release of weekly rankings and polls, Tuesday. The Beavers were put as high as 13 in the latest Intermat poll, followed by 14 according to D1 College Wrestling. Jim Zalesky's squad is listed at No. 15 by The Open Mat, meaning the Beavers have maintained at least a top 15 spot throughout the first month of the season. OSU's highest ranking was its preseason mark as the No. 9 best team in the land as rated by D1 College Wrestling.

As a squad the `Beavs boast a total of six wrestlers with national rankings attached to their names, but twice this year have had seven student-athletes accomplish that same feat. This week the highest individual ranking by any wrestler is shared by both Mike Mangrum (141 lbs.) and Scott Sakaguchi (149 lbs.). Both are returning All-Americans and are ranked fourth in the country, as Mangrum can be found in that slot through the Intermat polls and Sakaguchi lays claim to that number thanks to D1College Wrestling. Perhaps the most consistently rated wrestler so far this year has been heavyweight Chad Hanke, as the fifth-year senior has earned triple sixes from all three polls during the past three weeks. As a unit, OSU's half-dozen rated wrestlers claim a total of 16 separate rankings between each poll.

Oregon State stands at 1-1 overall and 1-0 in conference competition, following a fourth place finish (98.5 pts) at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite last weekend. The Beavers take on No. 2/3 Minnesota, Saturday in Minneapolis and then travel to take on No. 22 North Dakota State in Fargo on Sunday.
