Wrestling Ranked 18th By NWCA To Start Season

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State wrestling team is ranked 18th to start the 2011-12 season in the preseason poll released by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Thursday morning. The Beavers are the highest ranked Pac-12 Conference team, ahead of No. 21 Stanford. Boise State, Arizona State and Cal Poly are both receiving votes. Oregon State received 90 votes by the nation's coaches, just one point shy of No. 17 Pittsburgh and four behind Wyoming and Rutgers, who are tied for 15th. The Beavers will welcome three teams ranked in the top 25 to Gill Coliseum this season. Ninth-ranked Missouri comes to Corvallis on Nov. 25 and Wyoming visits Jan. 15. Oklahoma, which is ranked 10th nationally, marks Oregon State's last home event of the season on Feb. 3. The ranking rounds out the major preseason polls and Oregon State finds itself high in each. The Beavers are No. 11 according to d1collegewrestling.net, No. 17 in The OpenMat top 25 and rated No. 22 by Intermat. Additionally, six Beavers in the top 25 in at least two of the four ranking systems: Jason Lara (125), Garrett Drucker (133), Mike Mangrum (141), Scott Sakaguchi (149), RJ Pena (157) and Clayton Jack (heavyweight). Mangrum is the highest of the six at No. 5. Oregon State opens its 2011-12 slate Nov. 12 and 13 in Ashland, Ore., in the Best of the West Tournament hosted by Southern Oregon. Season tickets and single-meet tickets are now available. Season tickets for adults $46 and senior/youth are $34. Single-match tickets for adults are $7 and $5 for seniors/youth.
