Philadelphia - Fourth-seeded senior Colby Covington led a trio of Beaver wrestlers in advancing in the championship bracket in the first session of the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday morning in the Wells Fargo Center. The Beavers were in 14^th at the end of the morning session.

While both junior Clayton Jack and redshirt freshman Scott Sakaguchi both tallied wins in their first matches of the day, sophomore Mike Mangrum guaranteed a continuance in the championship bracket with a dominating performance in his first match of the day at 141 pounds.

Mangrum jumped out of the gates with a quick takedown of Vicente Varela of Hofstra, recording nearly three minutes of riding time, to win in a 9-3 decision.

Sakaguchi chalked up his second victory of the morning session over Cole Dallaserra of Wyoming, who had previously won 5-3 in the two wrestlers' first meeting on Dec. 16. Sakaguchi opened with an early takedown, allowing Dallaserra to tie at two all, but battling back for the go-ahead takedown to win 4-2.

Covington followed suit with the Beavers' first bonus point victory of the day, routing Mike Dessino of Bloomington in an 18-6 major decision.

Despite the remaining five wrestlers moving down to the wrestleback bracket, they didn't give up any bonus points to their opponents.
