Wrestling Makes Moves into Top 20
Feb. 2, 2010
Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team moved up another spot this week to 20th in the NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll for week 12.
The Beavers were previously ranked 21st last week and 22nd for the two weeks prior to that after breaking into the list in the December 8 poll. Oregon State is currently 16-1, 4-1 Pac-10, and currently has more dual meet wins than any other team in the top 25 other than No. 1 Iowa and tying No. 23 Rutgers.
Junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) remains in the top 10 in the Intermat Division I Individual Rankings, with the same ninth place ranking this week. Covington, who was previously ranked 11th, moved up after defeating previously ranked No. 3 Stephen Dwyer of Nebraska on January 24 in a 2-1 decision at 174 pounds. He has pinned five of his last seven competitors.
Five other Oregon State wrestlers also remain ranked in the InterMat Individual Rankings with senior Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) leading the way with a 13th place ranking at 157 pounds. Sophomore heavyweight Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) is 14th, while redshirt freshman Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) is 15th at 125 pounds and sophomore Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) is 16th at 133 pounds. Freshman RJ Pena (Salem, Ore.) rounds out the ranked wrestlers, earning a 17th place ranking at 149 pounds.
The Beavers have defeated two top 25 opponents in No. 12 Wisconsin in the first dual of the season and No. 24 Arizona State last weekend, but fell to No. 8 Boise State. Oregon State will take on two more ranked opponents before the regular season is over in Boise State again, No. 8 Oklahoma and No. 16 Cal Poly, who the team will take on Sunday.
Oregon State is currently riding a 15-meet winning streak going into this weekend’s duals against conference foes Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly, the longest since 1984. The Beavers’ margin of victory in their 16 wins has been 37-plus points on average.
