Three Beavers Named NSCAA Scholar All-West Region
Dec. 20, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State juniors Travis Anderson and Jake Parker along with senior John Swenson added to the Beavers' already astonishing cache of postseason awards when the trio was selected to the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) University Division Scholar All-West Region Team on Tuesday afternoon. Anderson, Parker and Swenson were recognized among a total of 17 student-athletes from 10 institutions awarded for superb work in the classroom and on the field. The three, who were named to the second team, account for almost half of the eight Pac-12 players recognized and their efforts tied Oregon State for the most spots on the squad. New Mexico and Stanford also had three student-athletes earn places on the team. The recognition on the NSCAA Academic All-Region Team is the first for Oregon State since 2003 and gives the program six such awards in its history. Aaron McHardy made the first team in 2001 and 2002 and Peter Billmeyer earned a spot in 2003. Anderson was already recognized for his combined athletic and academic work at the beginning of November when he was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District Men's Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He was the first men's soccer player to receive that distinction since 2008 and only the eighth in Oregon State history. All three student-athletes were named to the Pac-12 All-Academic First Team just over a month ago, with Swenson earning his third consecutive spot on the first team and Anderson and Parker their second in a row. The trio was joined on the first team by sophomore Josh Smith to give the Beavers the most first-team members for any conference school this year. Oregon State was also named as a recipient of the NSCAA Team Academic Award earlier last week, which represents work completed during the 2010-11 academic year, and is given to teams nationally that posted a collective grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Under Steve Simmons, the Beavers' classroom efforts paid off in the form of a 3.09 team GPA. Oregon State was one of only three Pac-12 institutions to earn that award. Oregon State posted a 5-11-2 record in 2011, including a fourth-place finish in the competitive Pac-12 with a 3-6-1 conference mark.
