Oct. 17, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State sophomore Danny Mwanga scores is eighth and ninth goals of the season in a 2-0 shutout of Pac-10 rival Washington Saturday night at Paul Lorenz Field.
The first score of the game came so quickly that those showing up late missed it. Mwanga scored his first goal of the night 37 seconds into the first half. He got the ball on a pass from Tanner French on a big breakaway and beat the Washington goalie to the lower right corner of the net.
"The guys put in the extra yard tonight and we were first touch to a lot of balls," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said following the win. "And that effort is the difference that made the game."
The Beavers (6-5-2 overall, 2-3-0 Pac-10) only had three shots in the first half but made up for it in the second half when they had eight shots. Their first two shots on goal went turned out to be goals my Mwanga. He added his second goal of the game in the 51st minute on a cross by Brian Ramsey.
"We still need to work on finishing," Mwanga said. "This game should have been four to zero so that's something we can improve."
Mwanga came into the weekend second in the conference in goals with seven but has increased that to nine. He scored four goals last season.
Transfer Alex Souza got his first start of the season in goal for the Beavers and got his first win of the season. He played the first half and recorded two saves. Steve Spangler finished out the second half in goal and had four saves.
Oregon State has a week off next weekend before playing host to Stanford Oct. 30 and California Nov.1.
