Golden Goal Gives Men's Soccer Overtime Win Against Marist
Sept. 27, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State sophomore Danny Mwanga's goal in the second minute of overtime gives the Beavers a 1-0 victory over Marist College Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.
The Beavers (4-2-2 overall) came out in the overtime period determined to end the match. They quickly controlled the ball and pushed it deep into Marist territory. Mwanga got the ball in the middle of the field and dribbled through two defenders and fired a shot toward the left side of the goal where it deflected off of a defender and went into the lower left side of the net for the win.
"Give credit to the guys for showing some mental stamina," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said following the match. "It's the second game of the weekend and they rebounded from the loss on Friday. One of the things I challenged them on before the game was resiliency and their ability to rebound."
Mwanga's goal gives him five and raises his point total to 10 for the season. He had two shots on goal in 82 minutes played in the game and also picked up his first yellow card of the season. He leads the team with 21 shots and 12 shots on goal.
Marist College (4-3-1) had its chances in the game as well but could not capitalize. It had six shots on goal.
Sophomore Oregon State goalie Steve Spangler recorded his third shutout of the season. He had six saves in goal during the game and has played every minute of the season in goal.
Sophomore Colin Mitchell had four shots, two on goal, for the Beavers and was putting pressure on the Marist defenders throughout the match.
The match against Marist gives the Beavers their first overtime win of the season and marks their final non-conference game as they look forward to conference play starting next weekend. They host UCLA Friday Oct. 2 at Paul Lorenz Field with a start time of 7:00pm.
"UCLA is a fantastic program," Simmons said. They are one of the hallmarks of Division I college soccer. It's a great opportunity to see where we measure up. We have a lot of work to do. The guys know that, and we'll put in some work this week, and get ready for UCLA."
