Farfan Scores First Goal of Season; Beavers Come Up Just Short Against UMKC
Sept. 23, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Roberto Farfan scored his first goal of the season and the Oregon State men's soccer team put consistent pressure on UMKC, but was only able to put one goal in the back of the net, falling to the visiting Roadrunners, 2-1, on Friday night in the Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic.
The loss drops the Beavers' record this season to 2-4-1.
Farfan put home his first strike of the season, and fourth of his career, early in the 54th minute to get OSU on the board. After a foul on UMKC was called at the top of the box, Emery Welshman, Farfan and Will Seymore lined up left to right facing the goal, careful not to reveal who would get their boot on the ball.
Ultimately, after Welshman made a run past the ball and into the box, Farfan curved his left-footed shot around the wall of Kangaroo defenders and out of the reach of Kyle Martin, as the UMKC keeper dove to his right.
The quality chance was not uncommon for the Beavers on the night. In the 16th minute, Martin was drawn out of net and Oregon State junior defender Chris Harms had his header blocked at the goal line by a UMKC defender.
Welshman and Colin Mitchell had seven shots combined, with a number straying just high or wide.
The Beavers outshot UMKC 13-10 and took seven corner kicks to the Kangaroos' four.
UMKC scored once in each half to earn the two goals necessary to edge Oregon State.
The Beavers will close out the Hensor/Zaher Classic on Sunday when they play CSU Bakersfield at 1:30 p.m. at Paul Lorenz Field.
