Men's Rowing Fourth; Women Seventh At Pac-12 Championships
May 13, 2012
LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - The Oregon State men's and women's rowing teams wrapped up competition at the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday afternoon, with the Beaver men coming in fourth for the fifth time in the last six seasons and the women finishing seventh for the third year in a row.
The men's 48 team points were just one shy of third-place Stanford while the women garnered 8.5 total points. The Washington men and California women both defended their conference titles. Both crews were ranked No. 1 in the nation coming into the races at the Sacramento State Aquatics Center in Lake Natoma, Calif.
On the men's side, the Beavers' V8 finished fourth for the sixth consecutive year with a time of 6:04.7. OSU came in behind Washington (5:43.5), California (5:51.5) and Stanford (5:57.7).
"I'm really proud of the way the varsity raced today," Oregon State men's head coach Steve Todd said. "They didn't match the elite speed that was shown in the event, but they raced their best and most complete effort today."
The team's 2V8 also came in fourth (6:24.0) while its V4 and N8 both earned bronze medals after third-place finishes. The Beavers' 4+ crew of Sam Callen (coxswain), Andrew Satterlee, Clark Fisher, Henry Stout and Nick Aerne posted a time of 6:57.3 while its N8 of Eric Sumner (coxswain), Martin Forde, Dylan Nelson, Henry Prosser, Eric Gustafson, Will Gangmark-Strickland, John Broc, Kyle Wilkins and Max Katz finished in 6:11.7.
"Our F8 and F4 did well today in securing two bronze medals for the squad," Todd said. "The F4 did exceptionally well considering they are four true novice rowers."
The two fourth-place and two third-place results for Oregon State were identical to what it had in last year's conference championships. However, in 2011 the team's 48 points were good enough for third place overall.
On the women's side, Oregon State's N8 of Hailey Page (coxswain), Alissa Kummer, Kaleen Coker, Julie Stark, Katie Low, Krista Soderlund, Emily Wright, Josephine Karz and Staci Sherer posted the team's best finish of the day, coming in fifth place in a time of 7:05.9.
The Beavers' V8 (6:49.5) and 2V8 (7:05.3) both came in seventh while their V4 (7:36.9) finished sixth. OSU's results this season were nearly the same as last year's Pac-10 Championships. The only difference was in the N8, which finished second a year ago.
