Men's Crew Posts Trio of Top-Three Finishes at Head of the Lake
Nov. 6, 2011
SEATTLE, Wash. - The Oregon State men's crew team completed its fall schedule with a trio of top-three finishes at the Head of the Lake in Seattle, Wash. on Sunday. The Beavers' varsity eight finished in third, while the squad's entries in the junior varsity eight and open four both finished in second. "We had wonderful, calm conditions today in Seattle," Oregon State head coach Steve Todd said. "The boats all raced well, especially our freshmen in the 4+. For their first race in that lineup I thought they really put down a great effort." Oregon State's freshman four of Sam Callen (coxswain), Martin Forde, Henry Prosser, Will Gangmark-Strickland and Max Katz took advantage of the calm conditions in posting a second-place finish with a time of 18:26.469. The Beavers' varsity eight, coxed by Dan Thompson, finished the challenging course in 16:39.296, one minute off the winning pace set by the host Washington Huskies and good enough for third place. Oregon State's junior varsity eight, coxed by Mike Hann, rowed to a second-place finish with a time of 17:23.140. The Head of the Lake was a three-mile race with a wide, three-point buoyed turn near the finish. Crews started at approximately 15-second intervals and raced against the clock. The course started in Lake Union along "boathouse row" with Seattle's iconic Space Needle in view. Rowers wound beneath the University Bridge into Portage Bay and through the Montlake Cut to Lake Washington where the course took a turn back toward Husky Stadium to the finish line near the entrance to Conibear Shellhouse at the University of Washington. After a pair of successful fall races, the squad will continue training in preparation for the spring season, which begins in March. "This fall we made some progress and we saw improvement across the board in fitness and technique," Todd said. "The team knows that we have a lot of miles to cover this winter and that training will be very intense." Men's Collegiate/Open 8+
