GOLD RIVER, Calif. -
The Oregon State men’s rowing team finished third at the Pac-10 Championships Sunday morning on the waters of Lake Natoma at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center. Two OSU crews earned bronze medal finishes and two finished fourth to leave the Beavers third overall. “Overall, I’m pretty pleased that the team placed third in points,” head coach Steve Todd said. “We didn’t meet every goal we set for this Championship, but the guys raced aggressively which is what I asked of them.” In the regatta’s opening race, the Beavers Freshman 8 raced start to finish in third place never feeling threatened by Stanford’s fourth place boat. OSU’s F8 crew covered the 2,000-meter course in 6-minutes, 13.5-seconds. “The frosh executed a really good race today and earned a medal for that effort. There’s some talent in this group and we’re looking forward to them reaching their potential.” In the second men’s race of the day, the Varsity 4+, OSU once again established position in third place early on and held fast the rest of the way. The Beavers’ finish time of 6:57.9 was over 15-seconds ahead of fourth place Washington State. “Our Varsity 4 did a good job today. They’ve made huge improvements since the beginning of the season.” The Junior Varsity 8 crew battled to a fourth place finish trailing from the beginning. The JV8 finished 11 seconds behind the crew from Stanford in third place in a time of 6:10.7. “The JV crew has been racing tough, fast opponents all year. They put together their best effort today and continue to develop as a young crew.” In the Varsity 8 race, the pecking order was established early with little change throughout the race. With all seven boats seeking one of the Pac-10’s three automatic qualifying bids to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships, the Beavers fell short finishing fourth in a time of 6:02.3, 10 seconds behind the bronze medal boat from Stanford. “The varsity boat was hoping to place and automatically qualify for IRA’s. We fell short of that goal today and we’ll have to wait and see what our fate is on selection.” At-large selections for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships are scheduled to be announced Tuesday, May 17. IRA Championships will be held May 30-June 2 at Camden, N.J. Results TEAM (Points) 1. Washington 70 2. California 65 3. Oregon State 48 4. Stanford 46 5. Washington State 29 6. USC 14 7.
