Morten Madsen Narrowly Misses Cut At Open Championship
July 20, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Former Oregon State men's golfer Morten Madsen fired a solid 1-over 71 in the second round of the Open Championship in Lancashire, England on Friday but missed the cut by two strokes. Madsen, who was competing in his first career major championship, had four birdies on Friday after finishing the opening round on Thursday with a 4-over 74 that included 14 pars and four bogeys at the par-70, 7,086-yard Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club to finish with a 5-over 74-71--145. The top 70 players, including ties, made the cut, which was 3-over 143, and advance to the weekend to play for the title in golf's oldest major championship. Brandt Snedeker leads the tournament through 36 holes with a 10-under 66-64-130, while Adam Scott is second with a 9-under 64-67--131 and Tiger Woods is third with a 6-under 67-67--134. Madsen can take the valuable experience from playing in one of golf's four major championships and know he finished ahead of several former major champions, including Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Angel Cabrera, Sandy Lyle, Todd Hamilton, Martin Kaymer, Lucas Glover, Justin Leonard, Ben Curtis, Trevor Immelman and last year's Open Champion Darren Clarke. Madsen enjoyed a successful career with the Beavers before leaving midway through his senior season to play professionally. He is fourth on Oregon State's career scoring average list with a 72.49 and eighth on the Beavers' single-season scoring average list after posting a 72.41 in 2008-09. The Silkeborg, Denmark native, who is currently playing on the European Challenge Tour, qualified for the British Open by claiming medalist honors at an Open Championship Local Final Qualifying in Southport and Ainsdale, England with an 8-under 65-71--136 at the Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club earlier this month. It's the second straight major championship that featured a current or former Oregon State golfer as rising senior Nick Sherwood competed in the 112th U.S. Open Championship at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., in June.
