June 9, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Former Oregon State student-athletes Diego Velasquez and Mandi Rodriguez have been awarded Tom Hansen Pac-10 Conference Medals.
Velasquez, from Bogota, Colombia, was a four-year starter, for the OSU men's golf team and was a two-time all-conference selection, earning first team honors in 2010. Velasquez helped lead the Beavers to the NCAA Championships this spring for the first time since the 2000-01 season. On the way to finishing fourth at the national championship, Velasquez fired a final round 6-under-par 66 to tie the competition course record at The Honors Course. Velasquez went on to be named a Division I PING first team All-American becoming the first OSU golfer to earn first team All-America honors. Velasquez was a Pac-10 All-Academic selection in 2009.
Rodriguez, a native of Baldwin Park, Calif., ended her career at Oregon State as one of the school's most decorated gymnasts in history. In 2010, Rodriguez finished third on the vault at the NCAA Championships to earn first team All-America honors on the event. In addition, Rodriguez earned second team honors on the floor exercise and in the all-around to finish her career as a seven-time All-American. The 2009 Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year, goes out as one of only six gymnasts in OSU history to record scores of 9.90 or better on all four events in her career - vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. She is a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection.
A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
The Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners will be honored at the State Farm Pride of the Pac-10 Breakfast held in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Pac-10 Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments next March.
