May 11, 2010
CORVALLIS - Oregon State men's golfers Alex Moore won and Nick Sherwood tied for second at Monday's U.S. Open Local Qualifier and have advanced to play in next month's U.S. Open Sectional.
Moore, a sophomore from Richland, Wash., shot a 4-under 67 to finish at the front of the 87-player field. Moore's round got off to a shaky start with back-to-back bogeys on the holes one and two, but after recovering with a par on the third hole, Moore birdied three of the next four and finished with six birdies in the round.
Sherwood, a freshman from Albany, Ore., carded a 3-under 68 to tie for second in a round that included five birdies.
The qualifier was played at Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, Ore. and played at 6,944 yards, par-71.
In addition to Moore and Sherwood, former Oregon State golfers Vincent Johnson, James Allenby and Mitch Gillis along with senior Diego Velasquez tied for seventh at 1-under par. Johnson and Velasquez are alternates for the Sectional.
OSU freshman David Fink tied for 12th at even par.
The U.S. Open Sectional that Moore and Sherwood will play in, is scheduled to begin June 7 at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore.
The Beavers are back in action next week, May 20-22, at NCAA Regionals at Gold Mountain Golf Club at Bremerton, Wash. OSU is the fourth seed with five teams advancing to next month's NCAA Championships.
