Peterson, Velasquez Earn Pac-10 Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Paul Peterson was named to the All-Pac-10 Second team and Diego Velasquez was named as an honorable mention as voted by the conference head golf coaches it was announced Friday.
Peterson, a junior from Salem, Ore., has had a career season thus far for the Beavers. He leads the team in scoring average at 71.87 which drops his career scoring average by nearly a full stroke at .975. The 71.87 scoring average is on pace to place him No. 3 on the Oregon State top-10 single season scoring average list.
Peterson's best finish was when he placed third at the 2008 Giustina Memorial Classic, Oregon State's home tournament. He finished 4-under par at the Giustina with a final score of 212 (71-71-70). He has finished in the top-25 in every event he has competed in this season which includes five top-10 finishes.
Velasquez, a junior from Bogota, Columbia, has had one of the best seasons in Oregon State history by collecting two individual championships, first at the Giustina Memorial Classic and again at the 63rd Annual Western Intercollegiate. He became the first Oregon State golfer to win two tournaments in the same season since Anthony Arvidson in the 1999-2000 season.
Velasquez is tied for the lowest round of the season on the team with 66. It came in the second round at the Western Intercollegiate.
Matthew Giles of USC and Nick Taylor of Washington have been named Pac-10 Co-Golfers of the Year, Gregor Main of UCLA has been named Freshman of the Year and Washington coach Matt Thurmond has been named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in voting by the Pac-10 men's golf coaches.
