Beavers Prepared For Weekend Tournament In Big 12 Country
April 19, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's golf team travels to Bryan, Texas to compete in the sixth annual Aggie Invitational this Saturday and Sunday in a field that includes all six teams from the Big 12 Conference South and four of the nation's top 20 teams.
"This weekend I'm looking forward to the guys being tested on a really difficult golf course," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "I think it will provide the guys a good test against a strong field and prepare the team mentally for next weekend."
COURSE INFORMATION: The 2012 Aggie Invitational will be held at the par-72, 7,146-yard Traditions Club that opened in 2004 and was designed by professional golf legend Jack Nicklaus and his son, Jack Nicklaus II.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE: Teams will 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday with tee times off the first and 10th holes beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT (5:30 a.m. PT) each day. The Beavers will be paired with Baylor and tee off at 8:26 a.m. CT (6:26 a.m. PT) off the 10th hole.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT: The two-day, 54-hole tournament is stroke play in a 6-count-5 format. The other time Oregon State played a 6-count-5 tournament this season was at the Fresno State Lexus Classic in March when the Beavers won the team title, its 35th in school history and second this season.
"I think for our team the 6-count-5 format is good," Reehoorn said. "I believe the bottom of our lineup is pretty strong and hopefully it will go in our favor the next couple of events."
THE FIELD: Oregon State, Texas A&M (Host), Baylor, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Texas, Texas Tech and Utah.
Fink will play in his first tournament since the Amer Ari Invitational in early February after injuring his wrist during team qualification competition for the Del Walker Match Play Championship.
"This event at A&M is important for David," Reehoorn said. "Not so much for him to play well but to get his competitive juices flowing and ready to compete. He gives us another guy in the lineup who can go out and shoot 5 or 6 under-par on any given day. We figured he would be a key contributor all year long and to add him back in the lineup at the end of the season I hope will give the team a little lift to give us a run in the postseason."
SEASON SCORING AVERAGES: Fink (72.33, 12 rounds), Chianello (72.72, 18 rounds), Moore (72.83, 24 rounds), Sherwood (73.00, 24 rounds), Motomochi (73.33, 12 rounds), Rawitzer (74.20, 15 rounds).
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Texas A&M is the two-time defending champion of its host tournament after recording an 18-shot victory last spring with a 5-over 370-359-356--1,085. Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State won medalist honors with a 6-under 72-67-71--210 to finish five strokes ahead of Jordan Russell of Texas A&M and his teammate Kevin Tway.
The tournament began in 2005, took a two-year hiatus in 2007 and 2008 and will be staged for the fourth consecutive year this weekend. The Beavers have never competed in the Aggie Invitational.
Other teams to win the title include Oklahoma State (2005, 2009) and Texas Tech (2006). Current PGA golfers to win the individual title include Anthony Kim of Oklahoma and Spencer Levin of New Mexico in 2005 and Rickie Fowler of Oklahoma State in 2006.
LAST TIME OUT: More than two weeks ago, Oregon State finished in seventh place at the 16-team U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif., with a 42-over 287-303-292--882 at the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course
Chianello placed the highest among the five Oregon State golfers on the individual leader board, finishing in a tie for 19th place with a 6-over 66-73-77--216. Moore had his best round of the tournament in the final round and finished in a tie for 46th place with a 13-over 73-78-72--223, while senior Jonnie Motomochi was steady throughout with a 15-over 74-76-75--225.
