Men's Golf Set For Battle At The Beach Beginning On Sunday
Feb. 11, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's golf team will tee it up at the 2nd Annual Battle at the Beach in Newport Coast, Calif., Sunday through Tuesday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at the par-70, 6,900-yard Ocean North Course at The Resort at Pelican Hill. The 13-team tournament is hosted by Long Beach State University. Tee times will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday and Monday with a shotgun start scheduled at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. "Again this week we face a very strong field," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "Different this week is that the format is a six-count-five format, similar to what we will see at the Pac-10 Championship. It is definitely going to be an event where we see how our team stacks up depth-wise." The Beavers will go with juniors Alex Moore, Jonnie Motomochi, and Casey King, sophomores Nick Sherwood and Jeff Petroff and freshman David Fink. "I'm excited to get Casey King into the field at this event," Reehoorn said. "Casey has been very good for us at home and I'm excited to see what he can do on the road in a tournament. It might take a little bit for him to get back in the competitive mode, but hopefully he can take some positives from this coming week and build toward being a solid contributor in our Top 5." Oregon State finished fourth at last year's inaugural Battle of the Beach with a 4-under 348-355-357--1060, finishing behind UCLA (10-under 1055), Arkansas (9-under 1056) and Washington (9-under 1056). Diego Velasquez led the Beavers with a 66-72-68--206 to finish tied for third overall.
The Beavers opened the spring season with a 13th place finish at the 20-team Amer Ari Invitational in Kona, Hawaii. Junior Alex Moore fired a team-best 4-under 68 in the final round to finish tied for 22nd overall at 4-under 71-73-68--212. Freshman David Fink had three consecutive rounds of even-par 72 to finish tied for 41st overall., while sophomore Nick Sherwood shot a 2-over 72-74-72--218 to finish tied for 59th and junior Jonnie Motomochi finished tied for 65th with a 3-over 69-74-76--219.
