David Fink Fires Another Sub-Par Round At Gifford Collegiate
Nov. 6, 2012
SAN MARTIN, Calif. - David Fink did it again. The junior lefty shot a 1-under 70 at the Gifford Collegiate on Tuesday, a day after firing a bogey-free 68, and is only three strokes behind the clubhouse leader with 18 holes to play.
Fink opened the second round with a double bogey on the first hole and bogey on the second at the par-71, 7,360-yard CordeValle Country Club, but didn't let it ruin his round, shooting 4 under the rest of the way. He sits in fourth place with a 4-under 138, but is only one stroke behind Rick Lamb of Tennessee and Pontus Widegren of UCLA, and three behind Stanford's Cameron Wilson.
"David was very solid again today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "I know he is excited for what lies ahead tomorrow."
As a team, the Beavers shot a 13-over 368 on Tuesday after opening with a 16-over 371 and are in 10th place with a 29-over 739. The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday and will be Oregon State's final 18 holes of the fall season.
"We haven't executed like we needed to be in certain spots," Reehoorn said. "We've got one more opportunity to end the fall season on a good note tomorrow."
Senior Nick Chianello bounced back on Tuesday with a 2-over 73 that included an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole and is tied for 59th place with a 10-over 152, while senior Matt Rawitzer is tied for 47th with a 7-over 75-74--149 and senior Nick Sherwood is a stroke back with an 8-over 74-76--150 for a tie for 50th.
Freshman Tyler Carlson is tied for 59th with a 10-over 77-75--152 and redshirt freshman Brian Jung is tied for 66th with 13-over 77-78--155. Freshman Chris Tedesco is competing as an individual and is tied for 68th with a 14-over 75-81--156.
Fink's best career finish is a tie for 10th place at both the Bandon Dunes Championship in 2011 and the Mark Simpson Invitational this fall. He has now shot seven under-par rounds this season and has a total of 21 in his career.
Wilson shot a 3-over 74 on Tuesday after firing a ridiculous 10-under 61 in the opening round to hold the lead, with a 7-under 135, while Lamb and Widegren have each shot in the 60's the first two rounds to sit two strokes back with a 5-under 137.
