Fink Fires Career-Best 5-Under 67 In Second Round At The Prestige
Oct. 10, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomore David Fink fired a career-best 5-under 67 with an eagle and three birdies to pace the Oregon State men's golf team at The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., on Monday. The Beavers knocked nine strokes off their opening round on Monday and sit in 11th place with a 3-over 294-285--579 after the second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament that is being played at the par-72, 7,156-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West. "We started off hot and just couldn't finish again," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We did what we should have done on the easy part of the course, but we had three bad swings today and that was seven shots that really cost us. "The guys are playing with a lot of confidence," Reehoorn added. "We just need to clean up the mistakes. I need to make sure the guys are upbeat and ready to play tomorrow. We have higher expectations this year and I need to make sure they don't get too down on themselves." Fink, who started his round on the 10th hole, came out on fire with a par, eagle and birdie on his first three holes and added birdies on the par-5 second and par-5 eighth holes and is tied for sixth individually with a 6-under 71-67--138. Monday's round was his best as a collegian after posting a 2-under 68 (Wyoming Cowboy Classic) and 2-under 69 (NCAA Arizona Regional) last season in his freshman campaign. "David played great all day and it's good to see," Reehoorn said. "He finally sees himself as a guy who can be our No. 1 player. He has high expectations for himself and it's good to see the work he is doing is paying off." Junior Nick Sherwood, who shot a bogey-free 3-under 69 on Sunday, shot a 2-over 74 on Monday and sits in 28th place with a 1-under 143. Freshman Scott Kim made it back-to-back even-par 72 rounds in his first collegiate event and is tied for 35th, while senior All-America Alex Moore rebounded after a 10-over 82 in the opening round with an even-par 72 on Monday and is tied for 76th.
