No. 23 Beavers Finish Fifth, Barry Third at Western Intercollegiate
April 18, 2010
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Mike Barry finished third and the No. 23 Oregon State men's golf team ended the Western Intercollegiate in fifth place Sunday afternoon at Pasatiempo Golf Course.
Barry led the tournament with 15 birdies as he finished at 4-under (66-71-69).
"Mike played well again today and had a great tournament. He had a chance to win it," head coach Brian Watts said. "Alex Moore played well today too which was good to see."
The Beavers played without several regulars, including No. 2-ranked Diego Velasquez (illness) and Paul Peterson and Morten Madsen, opening the door for lineup positions for the Pac-10 Championships next week.
Alex Moore shot a 1-under 69 Sunday to finish the tournament at 8-over (76-73-69) 218 to finish tied for 28th. Jonnie Motomochi and Nick Sherwood posted their third straight identical score to end tied for 32nd place and each carded 9-over (72-73-74) 219's for the tourney.
"It was good to get a lot of guys some tournament experience before we go to Pac-10 Championships," Watts said. "We'll have qualifying next week, but whoever makes the lineup will be coming off of actual tournament rounds. And that's always a good thing."
The Western Intercollegiate is a two-day, 54-hole tournament, April 17-18. Thirty-six holes were played Saturday with the final round being played Sunday on the 6,615-yard, par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Course. It is a six-play, five-count tournament.
Oregon won the tournament at 12-under (342-350-346) 1038. Individually, Eugene Wong, from Oregon, won at 8-under (65-70-67) 202.
