SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Oregon State men's golf team knocked 13 strokes off its second round in the opening day at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic and sits in a tie for eighth place at the ninth annual event.

The Beavers shot a 1-over 281 in the second round on Monday after posting a 14-over 294 in the morning round at the par-70, 7,133-yard Talking Stick Golf Club to head into Tuesday's final 18 holes in a tie for eighth in the 20-team tournament.

"After a sluggish start this morning, it is obvious I need to do something different to get these guys ready to compete," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "The confidence we had in the fall is missing and I'm not sure why."

Sophomore Nick Sherwood shot a 4-under 66 in the afternoon round and is tied for 13th overall with an even-par 74-66--140, while freshman David Fink went from a 9-over 79 in the morning round to a 2-under 68 in the afternoon round and is tied for 54th at 7-over with a 147.

"It was great to see Nick and David bounce back and play so well in the afternoon," Reehoorn added. "The ability and potential are there. I just need to do a better job of getting it out of the guys all the time."

Junior Alex Moore, who shot a school record 9-under 63 in the Beavers last tournament, had a 4-over 70-74--144 for a tie for 31st and junior Jonnie Motomochi is tied for 54th with a 7-over 73-74--147. Freshman Travis Milleman, who is making his first-ever college start, is tied for 71st with a 10-over 77-73--150.

The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m.
