Beavers in Ninth After Two Rounds at ASU Thunderbird

The Oregon State men's golf team, ranked 22nd in the nation by Golf World, completed the first day of competition at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational tied for ninth place after rounds of after rounds of 292 (+8) and 280 (-4).
The Beavers used the opening round to get comfortable with the course as all five golfers were over par. Sophomore Morten Madsen led the Orange and Black through the first 18 with a 1-over 72, while seniors Diego Velasquez and Paul Peterson each shot 2-over 73's. Fellow senior Mike Barry added a 3-over 74 in the first round and sophomore Casey King had a 6-over 77.
Four of the OSU golfers improved their scores during the afternoon round including Velasquez, who shot a team-best 3-under 68 to settle for a 1-under (73-68) 141. Madsen converted seven birdies in the second round to score a 2-under 69 to tie for 18th with Velasquez at 1-under (72-69) 141. Barry added a 2-under 69 of his own to finish the day at 1-over (74-69) 143.
The ASU Thunderbird Invitational is a two-day, 54-hole tournament played at the 7,057-yard, par-71 Karsten Golf Course, the same course that the Pac-10 Championships will be played on later this month. Thirty-six holes were played on Friday with the final 18 coming on Saturday.
