Feb. 4, 2010
KOHALA COAST, Hawai'i - The 13th-ranked Oregon State men's golf team finished the second round of the second day of the 20th annual Mauna Lani Invitational in 10th place, Thursday. Sophomore Morten Madsen led the Beavers with a 2-under 70 for a two-day score of (77, 70) 147.
"Morten (Madsen) just had a tremendous day today," head coach Brian Watts said. "He read the greens very well and it led to him recording several birdies."
Madsen came into the day tied for 50th after one round finished Thursday's round tied for 20th with four birdies attributing to his low score. Bouncing back from an off day on Wednesday, the native of Denmark is positioned for a strong final round on Friday.
The Beavers have shot a two-day total of 24-over par (302, 298) 600 on the par 72 - 6,913 yard Mauna Lani North Course and sit 22 strokes behind first place Washington. The wind that affected play yesterday was back again today. The team made the best of their situation, but can't deny the effects of the ocean breezes.
The 20th annual Mauna Lani Invitational is a 54-hole, three-day tournament running from Wed., Feb. 3 through Fri., Feb. 5.
Senior Diego Velasquez, who entered the tournament ranked No. 2 in the nation, and sophomore Jonnie Motomochi each of whom shot opening round 75's came back today with matching 76's. Senior Tyler Simpson also added a 76 Thursday cutting five strokes off of his opening round total. Senior Mike Barry shot a 6-over 78.
"It was tough again out there again today with the wind. It was there from the start, still howling." Watts said, also noting that everyone plays with the wind and there are still improvements to be made. "We need to work a little bit more on our putting. We're not making those short putts we need to make."
The Beavers head into the final day of the Mauna Lani Invitational Friday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Follow the action via live stats at GolfStat.com.
