Oregon State head football coach Mike Riley announced Wednesday the signing of  junior college cornerback Steven Nelson to a national letter of intent. Wednesday marked the first day that junior/community college football student-athletes can sign LOIs as mid-year transfers.

Nelson is a 6-foot, 185-pound transfer from the College of the Sequoias in Northern California. For his two-year career for the Giants he recorded 71 tackles, 19 pass breakups and six interceptions.

“Steven is an outstanding corner who we have had our eye on for quite some time”, Riley said. “He is a talented player who will step into our program and compete immediately.”

Nelson is a native of Warner Robins, Ga., and graduated from Northside High School. He was an All-Middle Georgia selection as a returner as a senior after returning five punts for touchdowns. Nelson also earned all-region defensive back honors and as a senior he made 30 tackles and six interceptions. He was selected to play in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association North/South All-Star Classic.

Nelson will be on campus next month for the start of winter term. He has two years of playing eligibility remaining with a redshirt year available.
