Audibles -- A Look Back at the Beaver Quarterbacks

Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State head coach Mike Riley said throughout spring and August’s camp that he had two quarterbacks that could start in the Pac-12 Conference. Thankfully for Beaver Nation, the winningest coach in school history, was right as that’s exactly what No. 13 OSU needed during the 2012 season to finish 9-3 overall and play in the 20th annual Valero Alamo Bowl. Sophomore co-team captain Sean Mannion got the early starting nod and embraced the role in leading the team to a 5-0 start, including big road victories over Arizona and UCLA. He was the Pac-12 Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week after a 433-yard effort against the Wildcats. But, following a win over Washington State, team physicians discovered a minor knee injury that required surgery. With Mannion on the sidelines, junior Cody Vaz entered the picture and got his first-ever start against one of the best defenses in the country at BYU. Vaz responded with a stellar 332-yard three-touchdown effort on his way to league honors after downing the Cougars on national television. Vaz would lead the team to victories over Utah and Arizona State, before suffering a late game ankle injury at Stanford, forcing Mannion back into the starting role. Mannion has started the rest of the season heading into bowl preparation. Overall, it has been one of the better seasons for the Beaver quarterbacks as the duo, plus Richie Harrington, have combined to have a 63 percent completion percentage with 3,798 yards and 27 touchdowns – two short of the school record of 2004. The OSU video team put together the following recap of the quarterbacks with interviews with Mannion, Vaz and offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf.
