Everyday Champion -- Colt Charles

By Caleb Hawley

Oregon State Sports Information

Colt Charles (McCall, Idaho/ Donnelly HS) is quite the multi-task player for the Oregon State University football team. Charles plays quarterback, he is the holder on placekicks, and he plays a vital roll as the scout team quarterback in preparing the starting defense for the next opponent.  He also will be the team’s second quarterback when the Beavers and Ducks play for the 109th time.  Charles carries this multi-tasking off the field to the classroom as he holds a grade-point average above 3.7. He plans to receive a degree in General Science with an option in Pre-Dentistry and his minor degree in Chemistry.

What got you started in football?

Ever since I was a little kid I just wanted to play. I don’t know what it was about it. I’ve always played since I was a little guy. My dad played football when he was in college so that probably had a lot to do with it.

How long have you been playing organized football?

The first real stuff was in 6th grade, which is when I actually started playing with a full pads team.

You are a quarterback, holder, and an important piece to the scout team preparing the first team defense, what has that experience been like?

It’s been awesome; it’s been my dream since I was a little kid to play college football. To come here and contribute anyway I can is awesome.  I want to help the team with whatever I can do, whether it be holding, helping out the QB’s or anything else.

What have you enjoyed most about OSU football?

Probably the people I’ve met, and the experiences I’ve had -- going to LSU and going to all of the Pac-10 places. All of my buddies are on the team, and everyone I’ve met through football has been the most important part.

What extra-curricular activities have you been involved in?

I’m in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and I’m also involved in the pre-dentistry club.

What brought you to OSU?

The opportunity to play football for the Beavers brought me here. I wanted to play in the Pac-10. I also have family ties in Portland, but football was the main reason.

How do you manage your time with all that you do?

Managing time is the key to being successful with academics and sports. You have to prioritize. You have to make decisions, sometimes it’s hard; your buddies want you to go out a lot of nights when you have homework, but you just have to tell them no. You just have to prioritize.

What do you like to do for fun in your free time?

I like to just hang out with my buddies. I like to fish, hunt, and hike; a lot of those outdoors things. I like to go skiing in the winter as well.

What are your plans after college?

Next year I am going to dental school, I have four years of dental school, hopefully graduate and become a dentist.
