Erickson is also tied for 15th, along with Florida's Steve Spurrier, for the most victories among active Division 1-A college coaches with 114. Erickson produced a 32-15 record in four years as head coach at Idaho (1982-85), 6-6 as head coach at Wyoming (1986), 12-10-1 in two years at Washington State (1987-88), 63-9-0 in six years at Miami (1989-94) and now 1-0 at Oregon State. Most recently, Dennis was head coach of the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL and produced a four-year record of 31-33-0. Erickson has been named Coach of the Year in three of the four conferences he has coached in--Big Sky, Pac-10 and Big East. Erickson has faced Fresno State one time previously as a head coach and is 1-0 vs. the Bulldogs. The current two victory lists follow:

Beaver radio play-by-play announcer Mike Parker will have a new hotline interview on the machine by 12 noon each day. Call 541-737-2000 for the taped interview with players and coaches. The interviews run less than 2 1/2 minutes. This week's schedule: Monday, Sept. 6 Jonathan Smith, quarterback Tuesday, Sept. 7 Dennis Weathersby, cornerback Wednesday, Sept. 8 LaDairis Jackson, defensive end Thursday, Sept. 9 Ken Simonton, tailback Friday, Sept. 10 Willy Robinson, defensive coordinator/secondary coach DENNIS ERICKSON COMMENTSON PERFORMANCE AT NEVADA: "We played okay. It was not a great game for us. I thought we played well defensively for the most part. There were some mistakes that we made that me must correct. We lost contain a number of times, particularly in the first half. Third down defensively in the first half was not good for us. However, I thought we came back and played extremely well in the second half on defense. We had a lot of opportunities offensively. We moved the ball but could not get it into the end zone in the first half. There were times I thought we could have put the game away but we made some mistakes. At the end of the game, particularly in the last quarter and a half, we played a lot better offensively." ON PERFORMANCE OF INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS ON OFFENSE: "Ken Simonton obviously had a tremendous game and did some great things. He ran the football and made them miss. He was probably the standout offensively. I thought our offensive line played decent. They can get better, but I was happy with their play overall. Marty Maurer had a good game until he was injured." ON PERFORMANCE OF INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS ON DEFENSE: "I thought we had several players play extremely well on defense. Terrence Carroll probably played as well as anyone and made a lot of plays for us. Aaron Wells had a heck of a game up front. James Allen was very consistent, as was Jonathan Jackson at linebacker. I was very happy with their play. ON FOURTH QUARTER PERFORMANCE AND GETTING STRONGER IN SECOND HALF: "We played a lot of players on defense and I think that helped us in the second half. It seemed like we were a little sluggish in the first half. We had a little more bounce in the second half and played very well on defense. I think we controlled the line of scrimmage offensively in the fourth quarter with the running game and made some plays that made the difference in the game." ON MAKING IMPROVEMENT BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND GAME: "There is no question that you are likely to make a lot of mistakes in the first game, some of which are nervous mistakes. I really believe you can correct a lot of those mistakes which is usually done in the second game. You need to improve every week but I believe there is probably as much improvement between the first week and the second week as there is any time during the season." WHERE DO YOU WANT TO SEE IMPROVEMENT MADE? "I was very disappointed in our passing game as we were not very consistent. We didn't run the routes like we need to and we didn't throw it like we need to. We need to make improvement in our passing game. Mental mistakes on defense hurt us, such as loss of containment. Those are things that we just need to improve in from an execution standpoint. I thought our kicking game was decent but we need to punt the ball better than we did at Nevada. Those are all concerns that we have this week." ON FRESNO STATE: "I don't know much about them at this point. I do know they have a lot of talent, especially skilled talent. Pat Hill and his staff do a great job. They are picked to win the WAC so you know that they are pretty darned good." ON FACING ANOTHER OUTSTANDING QUARTERBACK: "Billy Volek is an outstanding player. I know his dad very well and he is a good friend of mine. I watch Billy grow up and he is a tremendous competitor and a tremendous athlete. He is a coaches son and knows a lot about the game and he will be tough to deal with." ON PLAYING FIRST GAME AT RESER STADIUM: "I am excited about playing at home. It looks like we will have a big crowd. There is nothing like playing at home in front of your own people so we are excited about playing our first game at home." OSU-FRESNO STATE CONNECTION: There is a big connection between Oregon State and Fresno State. Dennis Erickson is a former assistant coach at Fresno State under Jim Sweeney. Erickson served as offensive coordinator for Sweeney from 1976-78. Willy Robinson, the Beavers' defensive coordinator and secondary coach, is a graduate of Fresno State (1978) and former assistant coach at Fresno State. Robinson spent 14 years on the Bulldogs' staff as an assistant under Sweeney. Robinson was the defensive coordinator for Fresno State from 1991-93, before joining Erickson with the Seattle Seahawks. BIG PLAY OFFENSE: Oregon State had a total of 52 "Big Plays" of over 25 yards in 1998. The Beavers add three plays in their season opener at Nevada. The "Big Play" list follows: Player/Players Yards Play Opponent TD Jonathan Smith to Martin Maurer 74 Pass Nevada Yes Ken Simonton 36 Run Nevada No Jonathan Smith to T.J. Houshmandzadeh 25 Pass Nevada NoTURNOVERS TELL THE TALE: One statistic, turnovers, usually have more to do with the deciding outcome of a football game than any other statistic. Oregon State defeated Nevada 28-13 in its season opener and had a plus two in the turnover department. The Beavers picked off a pair of Wolf Pack passes and recovered a fumble. OSU was guilty of only one turnover, that on a pass interception with 12 seconds left in the first half.. The season turnover chart follows:
