Spring Practice - Day 7 - Defense Rules the Day
April 12, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - When was the last time People Magazine and Sports Illustrated were on the Oregon State University campus at the same time? It's unlikely anybody knows the answer, but it would probably be a safe bet that it has never happened.
People was here for a photo shoot with head men's basketball coach Craig Robinson while SI's Stewart Mandel was making the Oregon swing today to visit the football teams. Mandel spoke with head coach Mike Riley and running back Jacquizz Rodgers. Watch for his reports here.
Week three of spring football practice started with the best weather of the month and the team took advantage by taking to the Reser Stadium field.
The team held its second "scrum" in as many practices, with more of an official scrimmage-like scheduled for Friday. A scrum, which is a relatively new term in the Beaver coaching staff terminology, is nothing more than situational downs and distances, but it does give the coaching staff a chance to look at full contact.
It was slow going for the offense during the "scrum" with the quarterbacks completing only a handful of passes thanks to the aggressive play by the seconday.
Each of the four quarterbacks (Ryan Katz, Peter Lalich, Jack Lomax, Cody Vaz) were out there for at least one series and each went deep to open up. Lomax was the only one who hit his receiver deep hooking up with Kevan Walker for a 65-yard touchdown along the sideline.
"It's generally tough to move the ball during spring practice," Oregon State head football coach Mike Riley said following practice Monday. "That's a pretty good sign on where we are defensively. Offensively, we just have to keep working all the parts, more and more to get better."
The offense was not to be outdone however. Following the "scrum" the team broke up into smaller groups and the offense went against the defense in a 7-on-7 situation.
The team will be back outside for practice rain or shine Wednesday and Friday of this week.
