Meet Johnny Hekker

Hekker Looking to Be an All-Around Specialist

2010: Johnny will be one of the top punters in the Pac-10 this season ... essentially a two-year starter entering the season ... has a strong leg and is becoming more consistent ... worked as a kickoff specialist during spring ball and could play that role this season, as well as the team's holder on kicks ... one of seven players on the 2010 Ray Guy Award preseason watch list -- award is presented to the nation's top punter. 2009: Semi-finalist for the Ray Guy Award ... 12 punts of 50 yards or greater ... career-long 64-yard punt vs. BYU in the Vegas Bowl ... 40.1 yards per punt average ranked ninth in the Pac-10, but the average was greatly altered due to windy conditions in the Vegas Bowl ... 19 punts downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line ranked in the top half of the conference ... All-Pac-10 Second Team according to Phil Steele ... Pac-10 All-Academic Second Team. 2008: Sun Bowl Special Teams MVP after averaging 45 yards on 10 punts, including boots of 57 and 52 yards in the fourth quarter ... struggled to start the season, but made huge strides during the last half of the year ... through the first eight games he averaged 35.9 yards per punt, over the final five he averaged 43.4 ... one 50-yard plus punt through first eight games, eight over the last five ... season-long 59 at UCLA ... 23 punts downed inside the 20-yard line, including 13 in the last five games (5 in Sun Bowl) ... downed three inside the 20 in upset of No. 1 USC, helping OSU control the field position ... arguably his best clutch punt of the season was a 49-yard boot that was downed at the USC 2-yard line with 3:15 to play and OSU leading 21-14 - led to a Greg Laybourn interception deep in USC territory.

BOTHELL: Two-year letterwinner in football ... 2007 All-KingCo first team quarterback and punter ... second team kicker ... helped Bothell High to two straight state finals appearances ... played forward and center for the basketball team ... earned second team All-KingCo at center ... state finalist in the triple jump and javelin ... captain of football and track & field teams ... helped track team to school's first state championship ... earned three letters in basketball and two in track & field.

PERSONAL: Born February 8, 1990 in Redmond, Wash. ... son of Robert and Joy Hekker ... has four brothers ... actively involved in community service, including the Boys and Girls Club and "Read Across America" ... majoring in general science.
