Ahmad Starks Named Pac-12 Men's Basketball Player Of The Week
Nov. 12, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior guard Ahmad Starks was named the Pac-12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time in his career, Commissioner Larry Scott announced on Monday. He's the first Oregon State player to receive the honor after the first week of games since Gary Payton in 1988. "It's always an honor being chosen for this award," Starks said. "It was a great first week for myself and the team, and now we are looking forward to showcasing the Beavers at Madison Square Garden in New York." Starks averaged 25.5 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead the Beavers to wins over Niagara (102-83) and New Mexico State (71-62) for a 2-0 start for the second straight year. The last time Oregon State started 2-0 in back-to-back seasons was 1999 and 2000. The Chicago, Ill., native made a career-high six three-pointers to give him 18 points and tied his career best with seven rebounds in the season opener against Niagara in which the Beavers scored their most points in a game since 1997. Two nights later he had a career-high 33 points with career bests in field goals (11), field goals attempted (21), free throws (9) and free throws attempted (12) to go along with five rebounds, five assists and four steals against New Mexico State. It's the third time an Oregon State player has received the recognition after the first week of games as Starks joins Jose Ortiz (12/1/86) and Payton (11/28/88) with the first prestigious honor. Starks was also named Pac-12 Player of the Week last December when he led the Beavers to a 3-0 record with 17 points, two steals, 2.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, including a career-high 22 points against Howard. He shot an astounding 75 percent (12-for-16) from three-point range, including a career-high five three-pointers in back-to-back games, and made all seven of his free throw attempts. He joins Payton (9), A.C. Green (4), Scott Haskin (3), David Lucas (3), Ortiz (3), Brent Barry (2), Corey Benjamin (2), Chad Scott (2), Charlie Sitton (2) and Jared Cunningham (2) as Oregon State players to win the award more than once. It's the 41st time an Oregon State player has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week (A.C. Green and Charlie Sitton shared it on March 12, 1984).
