Corvallis Rated Among Best Sports Cities
Oct. 8, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. -
Corvallis, Ore., has been ranked No. 71 in the Sporting News annual Best Sports Cities rankings, up from No. 99 last year.
This year's Best Sports Cities list features 399 cities and towns in the U.S. and Canada, ranked by a system that assigns points to a variety of categories, including a city's number of teams, their regular-season won-lost records, playoff berths, bowl appearances and tournament bids, championships, applicable power ratings, fan fervor, attendance and more.
In towns of approximate population of 55,000, Corvallis ranked fourth in the nation, trailing East Lansing, Mich., Blacksburg, Va., and Stillwater, Okla. Pennsylvania cities Pittsburgh and Philadelphia ranked as the two best cities.
"Corvallis' rankings rise and fall with Oregon State football and basketball, but we know that, win or lose, the fans there are going to support their teams in that community," said Sporting News chief of correspondents Bob Hille, who has coordinated the rankings since their expansion 13 years ago. "Corvallis has a lot going for it as a sports city."
