Men's Basketball Adds Familiar Name To 2012-13 Roster
Sept. 4, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Beaver fans need to get used to spelling and saying Schaftenaar once again as Olaf Schaftenaar, the younger brother of former men's basketball standout Roeland Schaftenaar, has joined the Oregon State program, head coach Craig Robinson announced on Tuesday. Olaf Schaftenaar, a 6-foot-9, 219-pound forward, played last season for Real Club Nautico de Tenerife in Spain and averaged 13.6 points in 30 games, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 44.3 percent from three-point land. He also played for the Netherlands at the 2010 and 2011 U18 European Championships. "We couldn't be more happy to add another quality player to the program especially this late," Robinson said. "We're equally excited about having another Schaftenaar to play for Oregon State. His length and shooting touch is a welcome addition along with his international experience." Olaf Schaftenaar (pronounced O-loff SHOFF-ten-arr) was born in Utrecht, Netherlands and averaged 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists when he played for the Dutch national championship team in 2010-11. He is available to play immediately with four years of eligibility and will add depth to an Oregon State frontline that includes Angus Brandt, Joe Burton, Devon Collier, Daniel Gomis and Eric Moreland. Roeland Schaftenaar played for Oregon State from 2007-10 and was named Most Valuable Player of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) when he averaged 13.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists to lead the Beavers to the CBI championship. He was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic recipient and was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on Jan. 26, 2009 after the Beavers swept California and Stanford on the road for the first time in 16 years.
