First Practice Report

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 10 official practices are in the books and the Oregon State men's basketball team is now ready to embark on its four-game, 11-day European Tour with nearly 14 hours of flight time scheduled for Saturday.

The Beavers will depart PDX at 8:25 a.m. on Saturday, stop briefly in Houston, Texas to change plans and then be in the air for nine hours, 45 minutes before they land at Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris at 8:15 a.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST) on Sunday. There is a nine-hour time difference from Corvallis to Europe (it will be 8 a.m. in Corvallis when it's 5 p.m. in Paris, Barcelona and Madrid).

College basketball teams get 10 official practices before international trips and Oregon State coach Craig Robinson was pleased with the progress the Beavers made from their first practice on Thursday, Aug. 2 to the final practice Friday afternoon.

"These guys aren't used to coming in to the summer being in tip-top shape so practice one through three were sluggish and then after that we just got better and better," Robinson said. "The guys are working well together and I like the team work. We are going to miss Jared (Cunningham), but we have a lot of folks who have an opportunity to step up and assume some of those minutes, some of those points, some of those rebounds and some of those steals.

"I didn't know how I was going to feel because this is the first time I've done something like this. We haven't played the games in Europe yet, but I can't possibly think that the games will be more important than these 10 practices we've had. It's given me a chance to sort of take a look at everybody and where they are, be able to tweak some things and then put some things in the offense that typically take a good deal of time to put in and have a chance to work on them. This has been absolutely invaluable."

The Beavers are scheduled to play four games during the trip:
• Tuesday, Aug. 21 -- vs. St. Charles of Charenton -- 10 a.m. (7 p.m. CEST)
• Friday, Aug. 24 -- vs. Manresa -- 10 a.m. (7 p.m. CEST)
• Sunday, Aug. 26 -- vs. Real Canoe -- 11 a.m. (8 p.m. CEST)
• Monday, Aug. 27 -- vs. A.S. Madrid -- 11 a.m. (8 p.m. CEST)

The coaches, student-athletes and support staff will also have the opportunity to enjoy the cultural experience of the trip with the following activities planned:
• Bike About Paris Tour
• Eiffel Tower Tour
• Salvador Dali Museum in Figueres Tour
• Spanish Super Cup (FC Barcelona vs. Real Madrid) at Camp Nou

The travel party will spend days two through four in Paris (Aug. 19-21), days five through seven in Barcelona (Aug. 22-24) and the eighth through 10th days in Madrid (Aug. 25-27) before flying back to Corvallis on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
