Oregon State Falls To Washington, 95-80, In Pac-12 Opener
Dec. 29, 2011
SEATTLE, Wash. - Four players scored in double-figures, led by Joe Burton's career-high 18 points, and Oregon State battled back from a 20-point first half deficit to make it close, but Washington pulled away down the stretch to win 95-80 at Alaska Airlines Arena on Thursday night.
Angus Brandt had 16 points, Jared Cunningham added 15 and Ahmad Starks chipped in 14 as the Beavers rallied in the second half to cut the lead to 83-80 on a Starks three-pointer with 2:55 to play before the Huskies scored the game's final 12 points.
"To our guys defense, we got off to our first bad start, and then I thought that we played them pretty evenly the whole game," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "We had every reason to close shop and move on, but these guys have no quit in them and I was happy about that."
Oregon State (10-3, 0-1 Pac-12) got seven rebounds each from Roberto Nelson and Burton and three blocked shots from Eric Moreland. Burton made 9-of-12 shots and Brandt made 7-of-12 to lead the Beavers second half comeback.
"They are a dangerous offensive team, Oregon State," Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar said. "There is nobody that they put on the court that can't do something offensively. Burton, we had him as a guy that we planned to go single coverage because he's such a good passer. He showed that he had offense tonight. So I commend our guys because we were able to come out and persevere here."
Washington (7-5, 1-0) got a game-high 26 points from freshman Tony Wroten and had five other players in double-figures as it built a 40-20 lead with 5:40 to play in the first half before the Beavers went on a 19-10 run to make it 50-39 at the break.
The Beavers next play Washington State at 3 p.m. on New Year's Eve in Spokane in a game that will be televised on ROOT Sports.
Pac-12 home action begins Thursday, Jan. 5 with California visiting Gill Coliseum, a game that will not be televised or have live video due to conference regulations. Tickets can be purchased online at osubeavers.com, by calling 1-800-GO-BEAVS or visiting the Gill Coliseum ticket office during business hours.
