Conforto, Smith Pick Up All-Region Honors
June 26, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State freshman Michael Conforto was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-West Region First Team while junior infielder Tyler Smith was named to its second team.
It is part of a growing list of honors for Conforto, who has been named a second team All-American by the ABCA, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Baseball America. He was also named the Freshman Hitter of the Year by the NCBWA and Lousiville Slugger after being named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Year.
Conforto is one of just two players in the Pac-12 to finish the season in the top 10 in batting average (eighth, .349), runs batted in (first, 76) and home runs (tied for first, 13). He's the first Beaver to lead the league in runs batted in since Jim Wilson led the Pac-10 North with 62 in 1982.
Smith joined Conforto as an All-Pac-12 First Team selection this season after batting .343, which ranks 10th in the league. He finished with 11 doubles, two triples, one home run and 39 RBI this season in 58 games.
The junior was also 9-of-11 in stolen base attempts to finish second on the team.
Smith and Conforto give the Beavers 12 first of second team All-West Region selections in head coach Pat Casey's 18 seasons at Oregon State.
