Michael Conforto Honored By Baseball America, Earns Third All-America Honor
June 22, 2012
DURHAM, N.C. - Oregon State freshman outfielder Michael Conforto earned his third All-America honor on Friday when Baseball America named him to its second team.
He was already named a second team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). That's in addition to national Freshman Hitter of the Year honors by the NCBWA and ABCA, which both also named him to their Freshman All-America Teams. Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball also named him a Freshman All-American.
Conforto also stands as a first team All-Pac-12 player as well as the league's Freshman of the Year.
Conforto stands as the lone player in the Pac-12 to rank in the top 10 in batting average (seventh, .349), runs batted in (first, 76) and home runs (tied for first, 13). He currently leads the Pac-12 by 12 RBI and should that hold up after the College World Series, Conforto, a native of Woodinville, Wash., would become the first Beaver to lead the league in that category since Jim Wilson paced the Pac-10 North with 62 in 1982.
Additionally, Conforto led the league in home runs (eight) and RBI (36) in conference only games.
He is the Beavers' 21st all-time All-American and the second in as many years after Sam Gaviglio was recognized in 2011. Conforto is the 12th recognized by the ABCA and the first since Cole Gillespie in 2006.
Eleven of the program's 21 All-Americans have played under head coach Pat Casey, who recently finished his 18th season with the Beavers.
Conforto is one of eight players from the Pac-12 to make one of the three All-America squads. The Pac-12's eight selections leads all conferences.
He and North Carolina State pitcher Carlos Rodon (first team) are the only two freshmen to make Baseball America's All-America team.
