Ryan Ortiz's single to center broke a 4-4 tie and gave Oregon State its first extra-innings win of the season on Sunday in a 5-4 victory over California. The single came in the 11th and gave the Beavers a comeback win over the Golden Bears, which gave OSU its first Pac-10 sweep since the 2006 season. Jorge Reyes threw seven full innings in the win, allowing seven hits and a run. He did not get the win. That went to Sam Gaviglio, who improved to 4-1 this season.
That's A Sweep
The Beavers' sweep of California in the team's last series marked Oregon State's first since the 2006 season, when taking all three from Washington State in Pullman. The Beavers went 18 series in between sweeps of a Pac-10 club.
Oregon State's starting trio of Tyler Waldron, Greg Peavey and Jorge Reyes has a Pac-10 earned run average of 1.74. Against California, the group had an ERA of 2.90, allowing seven earned runs in 21 2/3 innings of work.
Ortiz=Player Of The Week
Ryan Ortiz was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week on Monday after going 6-for-12 with four RBI against California.
Notes Of Importance
The series is being played on a Thursday through Saturday slate due to Easter on Sunday. Each Pac-10 series during the weekend will be played those days.
Stefen Romero and Ryan Ortiz have combined for nine RBI and 18 hits over OSU's six Pac-10 games.
The Beavers are off to their best Pac-10 start since the 2005 club also went 5-1. A win Thursday would give the Beavers a 6-1 mark, their best record through seven since going 7-1 in Pac-10 North play in 1997.
Oregon State is 3-0 in games played on Thursdays this season.
The Beavers are 6-18 in games played at Arizona. OSU last won there in the second game of the 2005 series.
The Beavers are 10-1 in their last 11 games.
