Last Game
Oregon State made a late comeback, scoring two runs in the seventh and another in the ninth but saw Fresno State post a final run in the bottom of the ninth of the 5-4 win at Beiden Field. The game marked the finale for the Beavers in Fresno as they took the first two games - both against Gonzaga - before dropping the last two to Fresno State. Each of the four games was decided by two runs or less. Sophomore Tony Bryant and freshman Scott Schultz picked up the wins for OSU.
That's Some Key Freshmen
Oregon State's impressive freshman pitching class played a big role in the Beavers' four games over the past weekend. All told, five freshmen (Cole Baylis, Cam Booser, Scott Schultz, Dan Child and Ben Wetzler) saw their first collegiate games and combined to throw 16 1/3 of the team's 36 1/3 innings. They combined to strike out 19 with just 12 hits and four earned runs allowed. That's an earned run average of 2.20.
WHIP It
Oregon State's pitchers tallied an impressive WHIP (walks-plus-hits per nine innings) this past weekend, finishing at 1.21. The Beavers' opponents finished at 1.43.
Walks To Strikeouts
The Beavers were also quite successful in getting opponents to miss, racking up 38 strikeouts, which at the start of the week, ranked OSU second in the Pac-10 only to Arizona, which tallied 40 strikeouts. OSU also walked 17, for a strikeout to walk ratio of 2.23:1.
`Three-Hit' Stamps
Junior Brian Stamps made quite the impression this past weekend, posting two three-hit games. In his first career game, against Gonzaga, he reached on two bunt singles and tripled and ended up scoring three of OSU's four runs.
Notes Of Importance
Oregon State has never played any of the four teams it is set to square off against this weekend in Texas.
The Beavers play four consecutive games this weekend for the second straight weekend (albeit over four days instead of the three days like the Fresno trip). OSU will not play a stretch like that throughout the rest of the regular season.
The Beavers will be playing all four games in Texas at Double-A parks. All three games in Corpus Christi are at the home of the Hooks, the affiliate of the Houston Astros. Monday's game is at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio, Texas, home to the Double-A affiliate of the Padres.
